Growth [2017]

‘Growth’ is a collection of wheel thrown and hand built ceramic pieces that explore and subvert our relationship with mold, a fungus that is usually thought of as the deterioration or spoilage of natural materials such as food. The pieces are finished with a stoneware lava glaze coloured with various oxides that create a tactile surface textures which present mold in a more beautiful and engaging form. In a similar manner in which mold grows, the lava glaze that was developed for this project literally grows a three dimensional physical layer when fired to 1280 degrees.
